qbrobotics has again used the Mechalogic to create a unique gripper. It seems like a traditional claw but smarter and with the ability to adapt to whatever object it is gripping. A secure and precise grip capable of lifting an iron ball without dropping it or a cream puffs without ruining it, you’ll only need to “tell her” to be strong or soft. Say bye to the long strings of programming, just three words: Soft, Medium, Strong.
qb SoftClaw is a compact, light and versatile Variable Stiffness gripper.
The core of this gripper is the qbmove Advanced, which is an excellent development platform already equipped with motors, electronics and elastic system. On the rear side there's a mechanical interface compliant to ISO9409-1 and a standard electronic connector to interface with any robotic arm. The mobile finger is driven by the actuator's shaft, so it can perform a soft movement to grasp objects avoiding damages on critical parts, or a steady grasp by increasing the stiffness; instead, the fixed finger is directly connected to the frame. The gripper is used by deflection control between the equilibrium position and the output shaft. Thanks to this control, objects of different dimension can be grasped giving the same closure reference (e.g. fully closed) and with the same stiffness for every positions.
Conventional grippers are equipped with a rigid mechanical actuation and can grasp more or less fragile objects only through direct controls on the applied force, therefore using force sensors, or indirect control through the absorbed current. Both of these approaches require specific algorithms and dedicated sensors, which involve limits on the dynamic response times, greater quantity of signals to be managed, higher hardware and software costs. Vice versa, the qb SoftClaw is able to grasp objects of the most disparate nature, exploiting the intrinsic mechanical intelligence of its variable stiffness system, without the use of any type of sensors on the contact surfaces or specific algorithms on the absorbed current by the motors. These aspects make it a versatile, light, economical and very easy to use device. Figure 1 shows the same grasp with different deflection preset.

The gripper offers many development possibilities of geometry and interfaces of fingers; in particular, you can quick change the magnetic finger-pads provided in different shapes that you can also customize.

qbrobotics nominated for the euRobotics Technology Transfer Award
The aim of the euRobotics Technology Transfer Award is to showcase the impact of robotics research and to raise the profile of technology transfer between science and industry.
The project presented by qbrobotics is based on the technology transfer realized starting from the Pisa/IIT SoftHand prototype to produce and commercialize the qb SoftHand for industrial applications.
The presentations for the euRobotics Technology Transfer Award 2020 will take place at ERF2020 in Malaga in a dedicated session on March 3rd and the Awards Ceremony will be handed on March 4th, during the Banquet Dinner at the Museo Automovilístico de Málaga.

UR is the market leader in the production of collaborative robots (cobots) and has launched a platform to promote hardware and software solutions compatible with UR robots: the UR + ecosystem is made up of products that offer plug&play implementation and programming.
qb SoftHand Industry is the first anthropomorphic robotic hand designed specifically for industrial applications and tasks to be UR + certified and able to offer a plug-and-play robot-gripper integration due to its ease of use and control.
Thanks to this new goal, we get the opprotunity to strengthen qbrobotics and Universal Robots collaboration. This began in 2017 when qb Softhand Research became part of the UR + ecosystem and continued in 2018 when the Danish company chose qbrobotics products for the realization of some demo to launch the new version of the cobot UR e-series.
I-RIM, Italy’s Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Machines just launched
The National Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, abbreviated I-RIM ( http://i-rim.it/en/ ), is a non-profit organization, established as an Association. The I-RIM purpose is to promote the development and practice of Robotics and Intelligent Machines technologies to improve citizens quality of life and well-being and enhance society conditions, through the development of new solutions for helping people, improving working conditions, transferring applications and economic enhancement of research, production improvement and its sustainability. I-RIM is an institute created to offer a national organizational reference for its members and stakeholders, and to interact with public institutions on the topics of Robotics and Intelligent Machines.
I-RIM will be introduced to the public at a major three-day event to be held in pavilions 9 and 10 of the Fiera di Roma, from 18 to 20 October 2019. The calendar is full of meetings for I-RIM members, but the events are open to all interested parties. The Three Days event is held jointly with Maker Faire - The European Edition 2019, the technological event attracting tens of thousands of fans of technology. The Three Days event and Maker Faire will be held in parallel at the Fiera di Roma. The events will include the first year of the Italian Conference of Robotics and Intelligent Machines, dedicated to fostering excellence in Italian research, to inform product and application developers about the possibilities offered by the latest results.

Team CoAware from the IIT - Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia wins Innovation Award 2018!
The team demonstrated how motion and ergonomics can be monitored and optimized in real time through a dynamic model - based on a KUKA LBR iiwa and proprietary software. Thanks to the use of the qb SoftHand, the lightweight independently gripped for objects such as a metallic cylinder and led it to a worker who could then handle the workpiece ergonomically using a polishing machine.
Winners of Robotic Grasping and Manipulation Competition @IROS2016
The QB - UNIPI - IIT Team earned the top award at this year’s Robotic grasping and Manipulation Competition, that took place in Daejeon, Korea during the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS). The team was asked to control their robotic hand through two different tracks, respectively Hand-in-hand grasping and Fully autonomous: each track consisted in different tasks that had to be completed in a limited time frame.
The Cybathlon is the brainchild of ETH Zurich and NCCR Robotics professor Robert Riener and was forged with three aims in mind; to facilitate conversation between academia and industry, to facilitate discussion between technology developers and people with disabilities and to promote the use of robotic assistive aids to the general public.
qbrobotics is attending at this event as part of the SoftHand PRO Team, lead by Sasha Godfrey. The team competes in the Powered Arm Prosthesis category and its pilot is Clint Olson, who uses an hand developed by the Italian Institute of Technology, the University of Pisa and qbrobotics. With this hand he has to perform different tasks that reminiscent of daily domestic activities.
