The AUTOMATA project (AUTOMated enriched digitisation of Archaeological liThics and cerAmics) combines archaeology and technology to revolutionise the documentation and analysis of archaeological finds.

Objects, with their stories and biographies, reveal human relationships, technologies, lifestyles, environments, and historical moments. However, the classification and documentation of common finds, such as ceramics and lithic artifacts, are complex, costly, and time-consuming processes, leaving millions of items inaccessible.

Thanks to advanced technologies based on robotics and AI-enhanced sensors, AUTOMATA introduces a practical and cost-effective solution for digitisation. The project enables the creation of 3D models enriched with archaeometric data, improving the acquisition of visible and non-visible properties of artifacts, surface rendering, and the integration of 2D representations. This approach optimises time and costs, democratising access to digitisation for museums and smaller institutions. It also supports conservation and restoration methods and promotes inclusive knowledge sharing through a dedicated crowdsourcing platform.

The collected data will be seamlessly integrated into the ECCCH Cloud platform, fostering new strategies for sharing and using information within the cultural and creative industries.

Supported by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, AUTOMATA represents a significant step forward in the enhancement and preservation of global cultural heritage.
